Short, honest answers about what plAyBC is, how it works, and what it does with your child's data (nothing).
- What age is plAyBC for?
- Roughly 8 months to 4 years. Smash mode is pure cause and effect: any key does something, so it works before a child knows a single letter. Learn mode suits toddlers who are starting to recognise letters and enjoy naming pictures. We built it for our own daughter and used it to teach her the alphabet before she turned one, always sitting together.
- Does it work on a phone or tablet without a keyboard?
- Yes. On a touch screen, every tap counts as a random letter, so Smash mode still fires animations and sounds. Learn mode is best with a real keyboard, because it needs a specific letter to show its flashcard. A laptop or a tablet with a keyboard attached is the ideal setup.
- Is it really free? Where are the ads?
- plAyBC is free and supported by a single ad unit on the home page, below the two mode cards. There are no ads inside Smash or Learn, so a child playing never sees or can tap an ad. Because the site is made for children, the ads are contextual and non-personalised.
- What data does plAyBC collect about my child?
- None. There are no accounts, no sign-up, and no cookies. Settings such as theme and letter case live in the page address, not on your device. Page views are counted with a cookieless, privacy-friendly analytics service that stores no personal data. Details are in the privacy policy linked in the footer.
- How do I switch word packs, or change the letter case and sounds?
- While playing, use the pill in the top bar to switch between the General, Animals, Food and Household packs, or to jump between Smash and Learn. The gear icon opens settings: in Smash you can pick ABC or abc and choose whether keys say the letter name or play a sound; in Learn you can show the picture alone, with the letter, or with the word.
- Why does it say the letter name instead of the letter sound?
- By default Smash reads the name of the letter, for example "bee" for B, because that is how most children first meet the alphabet and how parents tend to name keys. Switching Sound to Boops in the settings replaces the spoken letter with a playful sound effect instead.
- Does it need an internet connection?
- Only to load. Every illustration and every spoken word ships with the site as a small file, so once a mode is open it keeps working if the connection drops. Nothing your child does is sent anywhere.
